Τα Σ.Δ.Ε. στην Ελλάδα θεσμοθετήθηκαν με το νόμο 2525/97. Στις Ευρωπαϊκές χώρες ως θεσμός καθιερώθηκαν ως μέσο καταπολέμησης του κοινωνικού αποκλεισμού.

 Με τα Σ.Δ.Ε. παρέχεται η δυνατότητα σε πολίτες 18 ετών και άνω, που δεν ολοκλήρωσαν την εννιάχρονη υποχρεωτική εκπαίδευση, να αποκτήσουν τίτλο ισότιμο με το απολυτήριο Γυμνασίου. 

 Το Σχολείο Δεύτερης Ευκαιρίας Τρίπολης ξεκίνησε τη λειτουργία του κατά το σχολικό έτος 2008-09 (ΦΕΚ Ίδρυσης 665/2008) και μέχρι το 2011 συστεγαζόταν με το 4^ο Ενιαίο Λύκειο Τρίπολης. (Ακαδημίας 12)

 Από το σχολικό έτος 2011-2012 συνεχίζει τη λειτουργία του  σε ανακατασκευασμένο από το Δήμο Τρίπολης αυτόνομο χώρο, στο σχολικό συγκρότημα των ΕΠΑΛ-ΣΕΚ-ΙΕΚ Τρίπολης (Τεγέας Τέρμα)
Πρώτος Διευθυντής του ΣΔΕ Τρίπολης ήταν ο κ. Σουβαντζόγλου Βασίλειος (2008-2011).

 Τα σχολικά έτη 2011-2012 και 2012-2013 Διευθύντρια ήταν η κ. Καραγιαννοπούλου Νικολέττα

Το σχολικό έτος 2013-2014 Διευθύντρια ήταν η κ. Παπαδοπούλου Γεωργία
